Why Drawstring Bags Tear at the Corners

Every school lost-property pile contains drawstring bags with one corner blown out. It is the category’s signature failure, and it is pure physics.

The load path nobody draws

On a drawstring pack the cord does two jobs: it cinches the mouth and it carries the bag. Follow the force: shoulder, cord, down the back panel, and into the single point per side where the cord exits the bottom corner.

Everything the bag ever holds — boots, books, a week of kit — concentrates onto those two exits. There is no other structure.

What a bare hole does with that load

Cheap packs punch a hole in plain fabric, maybe with a plastic eyelet. Under load the hole’s edge takes the full force on a few threads at a time; each swing of the bag works the tear a little wider.

The pack fails in weeks — usually during the exact season it was printed to advertise.

What a built corner does instead

Fold a strip of webbing into the seam, bartack it, and set a metal grommet through the stack: now the cord pulls against webbing and stitch lines that spread the load across centimetres of seam instead of millimetres of thread.

Same bag, same physics, opposite outcome — the corner outlives the print.
